The Westhampton Board of Assessors is made up of three elected officials, with overlapping three year terms. The primary responsibility of the Assessor’s Office is to accurately and fairly assess all property in the Town of Westhampton, as required by Massachusetts General Law and administered by the Department of Revenue. The Assessor does not raise or lower taxes nor do they make the laws that affect property owners. While the tax rate is set by the Assessors, it is determined by all the Boards and Departments within the town. They determine the budget needed to provide for services such as schools, fire, law enforcement, roads, trash collection, etc. The tax rate is simply the rate which provides funds to pay for these services. The Assessor’s primary responsibility is to find the “full and fair cash value” of your property, so that you pay only your fair share of the taxes.

The Board of Assessors also has the responsibility for motor vehicle excise bills. Most bills originate at the State Registry of Motor Vehicles and are sent to us. Also handled in the office are abatements and appeals. Certain taxpayers who qualify are allowed exemptions on their property tax bills. These are primarily elderly over seventy years, veterans with a disability, and the blind. As long as the applicant meets all the requirements as per state law, the Assessors grant the exemption.
